Hollywood Beach Golf Club
History
The Hollywood Beach Golf Club is located in the City of Hollywood in Broward County.
Wally Nelson and noted golf course builder Charles Olsen were among the many individuals responsible for the early design of the Hollywood Beach golf course. in 1922, Olsen took charge of the construction of the golf course, located on former tomatoes fields, introduced some new features and added around 30 acres to the original tract.
The first nine holes were completed and in play later that year. Wally‘s brother Lee Nelson, the professional in charge of the course, was spending most of his time on the course directing some of the finishing work and incorporating some late ideas into the final design.
On February 4, 1923, the 6,000 yard 18-hole golf course was formally opened to the public and no green fees were charged. The club’s golf professionals, Lee and Chic Nelson were on hand to give instruction and assist the players in perfecting the strokes.
A few months later in March, President Warren G. Harding made a visit to Hollywood and played 18 holes on the golf course. The president stated that the course was fine and complimented the putting greens. Later that year, Ralph Young of Indiana was brought in to oversee the course and update the layout.
In 1942, the club was donated to the military and became the Servicemen’s Country Club. The clubhouse and golf course were used to help maintain morale in Broward County during WWII. In the mid 195os, the club undertook a renovation project supervised by golf architect Mark Mahannah. Several greens were rebuilt and enlarged, and the fairways were raised about four inches.
Today
The Hollywood Beach Golf Club includes an 18-hole, par-70 golf course featuring four sets of tees playing from 4,900 to 6,300 yards. The 110-acre golf course offers a pure golf experience without the view of homes abutting any of the fairways, tees, or greens.
The picturesque course gives you an experience reminiscent of old Florida and lets you focus on your golf game and leave the day-to-day distractions behind. Test your skills on our narrow fairways, various water hazards, and strategically placed bunkers.
Local Knowledge
Hollywood Beach’s golf professionals, Wally, Lee and Chic Nelson were only half of a famous golfing family that included three more brothers, Chester (Chess), Erwin and Dick. In 1924, the club hired Dick and Erwin to be the “working” golf professionals and signed Gene Sarazen and Leo Diegel as the “playing” professionals representing the club. Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, all six brothers would become golf professionals and work at the Hollywood Beach Golf Club over the years.
