Redland Golf and Country Club
History
The Redland Golf and Country Club is located in the unincorporated community of Redland near the City of Homestead in Miami-Dade County.
Homesteads golfing history dates back to 1926 when the Homestead Golf and country Club opened. Designed by H.C.C. Tippett, the nine-hole course was located a few miles west of town. The golf course only lasted a few years.
In the 1940s, when Joe L. Burton, a Homestead department store owner (who had never had a golf club in his hand) started to raise money for an 18-hole championship golf course in the Redland District, many said it couldn’t be done. But Burton, along with a handful of men, raised $40,000 in four months by selling memberships at $100 each. In 1946, they chose the name of the club as the “Redland Golf and Country Club” and started to organize. They bought 117 acres from the Model Home Land Company at a very low price.
In 1947, the club retained the services of golf course architect Red Lawrence, to design a 6,500 yard 18-hole course. Lawrence was directly involved with the design of golf courses at Indian Creek and Boca Raton and Miami Shores. A.W. Lindgren Land Clearing Company was contracted to clear the property. Lindgren had worked on the two Miami Biltmore courses and the nine-hole Granada course back in 1920s.Ground was broken in May and construction soon began. A year later, Lindgren reported that nine greens and tees had been constructed, however, heavy rainfall during the summer and two fall hurricanes slowed the construction.
On Saturday, February 5, 1949, the nine hole golf course opened for play. The 3,270-yard course had a par of 36 with two par fives, two par threes and the rest par fours. A temporary clubhouse was made available. It would be two decades before the second nine holes were built and opened in 1964.
Today
The Redland Golf and Country Club includes an 18-hole, par-72 golf course featuring four sets of tees playing from 5,600 to 6,600 yards. This medium-length layout provides a fun but challenging golfing experience.
Local Knowledge
Redland’s architect, Robert “Red” Lawrence’s got his first golf design experience in 1919, while working for Walter Travis on two courses at Westchester Country Club in New York.
Soon after, Lawrence went to work for the golf course architectural firm of Toomey and Flynn as their construction superintendent. Following the Depression, Lawrence ended up in Boca Raton doing golf course maintenance. After World War II, Lawrence moved into golf course architecture full-time initially working in the Miami area. Lawrence was one of the 14 founding members of American Society of Golf Course Architect in 1947. The original 1947 Red Lawrence 9-hole layout is still in use and consists of the current front nine.
